Question 5

To Sir/Madam

I am writing to you to tell you how i have attracted and addressed my audience in the film. Initially during the planning stage we had produced questionnaires where we asked a number of questions about what the audience look for in a film opening and what actually engages them, for example we asked them if they thought camera shots, lighting, soundtrack etc, was effective and to choose out of them which one engaged them the most.

The first way we thought about engaging and addressing our audience was through the use of camera shots. We created a storyboard and during that period we discussed what shots would be put in where, talking about how and why it would appeal to that target audience, for example in the bathroom scene when the protagonist is staring at the mirror, it gets across his stress and anxiety which shows off realistic emotions, engaging the audience as they know how much weight is on his shoulders and how badly the anxiety is running through his body because the average person would have experienced it, for example people who work, students who are studying waiting for life changing exam results relationships etc, so the audience will be able to link with the anxiety of the character through the use of camera shots, another example is the point of view shows of the evidence, this addresses them because it is showing the audience
what the protagonist is seeing through his eyes, so it will appeal to them because it makes them feel more involved.

The target audience might not be able to completely relate to the storyline, but they can relate to the character. The character is a normal man, well dressed and well groomed, middle-class man. This is a general attire for a middle-aged working man which the audience can appeal too.

The lighting was also used to attract the audience. We done this by making our film black and white, this was to show a change in time, it also creates a mysterious effect which is supported by the soundtrack as the soundtrack was drowsy and slow-paced and repetitive creating a mysterious effect, which would attract our audience as they are looking for the element of mystery in the film, which is being shown to them straight away.

The use of camera shots was the main way we tried to attract and address the audience. This was because everything could be shown in this, it could show the emotions of the character, which can link in with the audience as they can relate, also the situation he is in, for example the over shoulder shots of him looking at the evidence boards, the shots we used were to make the audience get a feel of the film opening, the situation and the character. Our film consisted of very minimal dialogue because we wanted to attract and address the audience in a different way, this is by telling the story in a cinematic way rather than letting the dialogue do the story telling.
